Our Journey Continues….
TheMystic River Jewish History Project continues its journey in East Boston in the cherished Victorian Chapel that lies at the entrance to the oldest Jewish cemetery in Massachusetts. The Ohabei Shalom Cemetery, founded in 1844, continues to serve the community as the focal point for a unique initiative.
Imagine telling the story of the Mystic River Jewish communities that thrived from the late 19th century through the middle of the 20th century… a permanent exhibition on the history of Jewish immigration in East Boston, Winthrop, Chelsea, Revere, Malden, Malden, Medford and Somerville.
Imagine the Ohabei Shalom Cemetery’s handsome granite Chapel, preserved and refurbished to house a permanent history of Jewish immigration and expressing a valuable lesson for young people of all backgrounds…the exhibit including information on the history of immigration of Irish, Italians, Colombians, El Salvadorans, Brazilians and Vietnamese.
Imagine the story of Mystic River Jewish life being shared with young people, providing important examples of how struggle can lead to success, how sacrifice can lead to a better tomorrow, how despair can turn to hope, and how determination can overcome the many obstacles that come with a new way of life.
Imagine the shared immigrant experience becoming a continuing source of inspiration to Jewish children from the suburbs and immigrant youth from Latin America, Africa and Asia….the Chapel used by organizations serving new immigrants living in Chelsea, Revere and East Boston
Now the Ohabei Shalom Chapel is listed on the National Register of Historic Places in recognition of its significance in American history, architecture and culture. Dedicated in 1903, the Chapel is part of a $3.5 million capital campaign to provide resources for the restoration, historical programs and to serve as a resource center for youth activities.
Help us to make the Mystic River Jewish History Project a reality. Please consider a generous year-end contribution to this far-reaching community endeavor. With your support our journey can continue…
